Volunteerism and Giving

At Medtronic, we believe that employee volunteerism and giving are vital components of employee engagement. To foster participation, we empower employees to follow their passions and support their local communities through easily accessible programs.

Beginning in January 2012, we launched a new web site that allows employees to create personal profile pages where they can:

  • log volunteer hours,
  • document volunteer events and invite others to participate,
  • research and track charities of interest, and
  • access information on Medtronic-sponsored community programs such as our Volunteer Grants, Matching Gifts to Education, and Momentum Awards.

More than 6,450 employees created personal pages and logged nearly 17,000 volunteer hours in the first months following the site launch.


Project 6: Global Employee Volunteerism Program

Project 6 is our global month of volunteerism that encourages employees worldwide to demonstrate the sixth tenet of our Mission – “to maintain good citizenship as a company” – in their communities every June. Last year, more than 4,200 Medtronic employees participated in 255 employee-led Project 6 volunteer events in 36 countries. Together they contributed almost 18,000 hours of service through activities such as meal distribution, clothing drives, and local park and beach clean-ups.

Volunteer Grants

Medtronic Volunteer Grants encourage employees to pursue causes close to their hearts. For every 25 hours of employee service to a qualifying nonprofit or non-governmental organization, the Medtronic Foundation awards $500 per year to the organization. The Foundation also matches employee donations to the organization up to an additional $500 annually.


Matching Gifts

In fiscal year 2012, Medtronic coordinated United Way giving campaigns at 10 U.S. facilities, in which employee contributions are matched dollar for dollar by the Medtronic Foundation. In total, Medtronic employees and the Medtronic Foundation donated $5.9 million to the United Way during the year.

The Medtronic Foundation also matches employee contributions made to U.S. educational institutions dollar for dollar up to $15,000 per year. In fiscal year 2012, employees and the Foundation together contributed $3 million to institutions in 49 U.S. states.
